The “Tamba Dinosaur Fossil Discovery Site” in Sannan Town, Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, is where the fossils of one of Japan’s largest herbivorous dinosaurs, the Tamba Dinosaur, were unearthed in 2006. Found in strata dating back to the Early Cretaceous period (about 110 million years ago), numerous fossils have since been excavated. Today, a viewing deck has been installed, allowing visitors to see the actual excavation site up close.
Right in front of it stands a memorial to the hydroelectric power plant that was built and operated by local residents of the former Kamikugemura during the Taisho era. Together with the 110-million-year-old history, it offers a tangible sense of the passage of time in this region.
